Nerd News in Brief

After a full weekend of shirking, I find it refreshing to start the new week with a little Nerd News in Brief. What can I say? I’m a classicist.

  • Frontalot celebrity chat: The man himself, Baddd Spellah, and other members of the Frontalot musical entourage will be featured in this Xfire celebrity chat Thursday’s (that being, of course, January 25th). Said soiree will begin at 7:00 PM eastern, and additional info (as well as steps for registration/pre-registration) can be easily located.
  • MC Lars tour: MC Lars has a bevy of tour dates lined up for February and March. This news is especially pertinent for those of us rooted firmly on the right side of the continental map. Is Lars coming to your greater metropolitan area? Take a gander and see.
  • Optimus Rhyme saves the planet: This Friday, January 26, Optimus Rhyme will take part in the Benefit to Stop Global Warming. Said show will kick-off at 7:00 PM at Seattle’s Nectar Lounge. The cover price is ten bones, and you gotsta be 21 or up to play.
  • WOW rap: The aforementioned Baddd Spellah recently hipped me to one Shaun Connery, a gentleman who raps about a little game called World of Warcraft. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. In addition, Mr. Connery would like to ask you about “The Penis Mightier.” Check it out.
  • Watch Tyra get a knife to the spleen: According to last week’s Northwest Nerdcore Podcast 4, MC Router has been offered a chance to appear on The Tyra Banks Show. Was she being for real? Was it just some strange joke? Listen for yourself and tell me what you think.
  • The show that was: Speaking of our friends in the Pacific Northwest, last weekend’s show at Fuel (brought to you, in part, by the aforesaid Northwest Nerdcore collective) has been exquisitely documented. Do yourself a favor and peruse the loveliness.
  • Conspicuous consumption: For any nerds out there with a thirst for new stuff, I would humbly suggest checking out the following items. My loathing for the iPod as a device is only bested by my adoration for the subtle architecture of the Game Boy series. Ere go, I harbor an odd ambivalence toward this device. Of course, since the only way to procure one is to make it myself, I reckon I’ll gladly do without. The same can’t be said for Jim Mahfood’s “Ask For Janice” comic, a retelling of the making of Beastie Boys classic Paul’s Boutique. DJMC recently picked up a copy, and I’ve been motivated to do the same. Thankfully, Mahfood’s still got a few of the very limited run for sale from his site.
  • I’ll end on a high note: Nerdcore newsman Gabriel has recently promised more regular editions of his vidblog Nerdcore News, and I think I speak for the entire community when I say fuck-to-the-yeah! Please join me in triumphant jubilation and peep his most recent submission.

How can you not have love for the iPod? Damn thing changed my life. Now instead of spending 10-15 minutes each morning sitting in front of my CDs trying to figure out what I want to listen to for the day. (you think I'm kidding?) I get to drive 60-70 mph down the highway trying to figure out what I want to listen to.

Also, while I was watching the new Nerdcore News segment I decided that Gabe is the Peter Jennings of Nerdcore. Just thought you'd like to know.

Now back to hacking Excel spreadsheets. *YEAH*

Thanks for the distraction.

I am anti-iPod for no other reason than the simple fact that I am anti-iTunes. I’ve got a Mobiblu Cube MP3 player, a MP3/CD player in my car, and a micro SD MP3 interface on my new cell phone. In short, I’m up to my arsehole in MP3’s as is.

Peter Jennings, Eeyore, and that dude from Crash Test Dummies had a baby. And they named him Gabriel.

Speaking of Gabe, I’ve got a little project in mind that I’d like to try to put together with you, him, and Glenn. If any of y’all read this, hit me up for details.

See none of those mp3 players would work for me. I have some where around 700 CDs, about 3 feet of vinyl, and a bunch of downloaded stuff. Hell, the 60 Gig iPod I have is already full and it barely holds a fraction of my music. And, while my tastes have been some what stable recently (mostly nerdcore, indiepop, and a few other assortments) it can take radical shifts at the drop of a hat (i.e. the slide into Make Up, early Fugazi, and Black Eye that it took last week) I need a large hard drive set up to keep me happy. I've played around with some of the other hard drive players, but none has an interface that is anywhere near as intuitive as the iPod. And thats important considering I listen to most of my music in the car (I spend about 2 hours a day commuting). Bottom line, I am exactly the kind of user that the iPod is really geared for.

As for iTunes, my main complaint is the DRM, which sucks. I have a mac though (see this post. I relate way to much to that video) and I have an Airport Express, which makes dealing with my collection so much easier. So, I suck it up and deal with it.

Re: project. See your email.

Oh, and boo on the Fuel videos. I saw the link at work (YouTube is filtered) and thought there were even more videos to be found. Got home and had my hopes crushed. :( Oh well, keep making me look like the cheap amateur that I am as far as the news and I'll forgive you. :)

I have pretty big music collection as well (though only about half the size of yours), and that’s exactly why I can’t abide by a big, hard drive MP3 player. I purposefully have to limit the amount of music I can access at any given time or I become totally non-productive! :)

I have a gigantic music collection, which is only limited by my lack of hard drive space. I dig the iPod, but I hate iTunes. They should just go ahead and make the thing a simple drive folder, into which you drop your mp3 files. The world would be so much better if they did (and I would be able to fit more music on my HD, without iTunes and Quicktime taking up so much space!)...

Amen, 'Nuk. Amen. I would happily own a legitimately iTunes-less iPod.

Not a fan of the iTunes (especially the DRM iTunes store), although I think it is one of the better media players (unfortunately). But seriously, it takes like 1 minute to start, and it doesn't have a stop button. Not cool. Foobar2000, despite all it's glitches, works much better.

I still use Winamp as my primary media player. Damn, I'm old! :D
