Radio Free Hipster Ep. 147: The Living Bookend

It's hard to live here in modern America and not think about political divisions. Shit, it's practically all we think about.

At the core I believe the real difference comes down to two simple ideologies; those at the farthest point to the left want everything to change, while those at the farthest on the right want nothing to change. And while I lean more toward the former with regard to actual socio-political philosophy, I can be pretty damn right-wing when it comes to my own life—almost staggeringly inflexible.

I am content to do the same things in the same ways not just because it helps to dull my perpetual anxiety, but also because it's easy. Sadly, things seldom stay easy.

Right now things are especially not-easy, so I'm stepping away from some projects for a while. Hopefully just a short while more, mind you, but the podcast—at least as I left it last year—seemed particularly… unfinished.

So let's just call this a better end point, temporary as it may be.

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
Not everyone can say they have a Beefy/Spellah-penned theme song.

Track 1: Adam WarRock – "GRWN UP KDS"
I've been bumping this track since the week before the EP actually dropped. Continually.

Z's 1st interlude: "Great big adolescents."
Which is, I should point out, not the name of my Adolescents tribute band.

Track 2: The 88 – "At Least I Was Here"
I started to play the full version, but this truncated cut seemed more impactful.

Track 3: Marcus Coronel – "Bacon Pancakes vs. Empire State of Mind"
For this one I specifically played the full version. Because bacon pancakes.

Track 4: R_Garcia – "Indifferent Times"
Definitely check out No Holds Bard. Garcia always manages to impress, but this one is especially engaging.

Track 5: Illbotz – "Michael McDonald's Crunk Classics (skit)"
If my life is gonna be a Michael McDonald song it's damn well gonna be one sung by Big Perm.

Track 6: Stenobot – "Welcome Home"
I dream of an R_Garcia/Stenobot collab. It would surely be a chip-rock masterpiece.

Track 7: Reel Big Fish – "Ask"
A last-minute addition to the play list, but one I'm definitely happy I included.

Track 8: Anchorman dialog / The Police vs. Jungle Brothers – "Lonely Jungle Brothers"
Call this one a throwback to the earlier days of the 'cast.

Track 9: Dual Core – "Staring at the Last Star"
Don't give me none of that "all the feels" shit; admit that this song made you cry!

Z's 2nd interlude: "Another gorgeous composition."
I never got around to reviewing All the Things, even though I rightly should have. Suffice it to say it's excellent, and you oughta own it.

Track 10: The Grammar Club – "Phonin' It In"
I actually pushed this show back a bit so as not to step on Bioavailable's release date. Didn't wanna let this track slip out before you could actually make it your own.

Track 11: DJ Earworm – "United States of Pop 2012"
This one should have been a part of my year-end podcast, which sadly never happened.

Track 12: Psycosis – "United States of Clop 2012"
See above.

Track 13: melodysheep – "Secret of the Stars"
Neil deGrasse goddamn Tyson.

Track 14: Marc with a C – "Daddy, Make the Sun Come Out"
Marc's Popular Music does some strange and wonderful things, but this track is a personal favorite.

Z's final interlude: "The best thing, the strongest thing about this community—about this culture—is you."
File under: Cheesy But True.

Track 15: Optimus Rhyme – "Daryl Hannah"
"How will you feel with an expiration date?"

Before this goes any further I'd just like to thank you all for your kind words and support over the past few weeks. They've meant a lot. More than you could know.

Now as for what happens around here, well, that's still being discussed. It seems that, while my need for some time off was understood and unanimously supported, my plan to let the land go fallow was, well, less so. I've had a number of allies inquire about minding the blog while I see to moving and whatnot, and even some parties interested in keeping the podcast going in my stead.

And I like that idea. I like it a lot.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 136: Model Behavior

I realized as I was listening back to this episode that I say the word "weird" a lot while describing the concept behind the show. And that's simply because it's, well, weird.

It all started, as so many things do, with a slump. I had a clear vision for the last couple of podcasts, but the well had run dry by the time I got to this one. And then I heard a specific song. More precisely I heard a specific word in a specific song.

I sort of dared myself to build a show around it. And I did.

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
Both these guys could be models. They's mad pretty.

Track 1: Handsome Boy Modeling School - "Look at This Face (Oh My God They're Gorgeous)"
Even if you think you don't know Handsome Boy, you know Handsome Boy.

Z's 1st interlude: "A particularly hilarious episode of short-lived Chris Elliot sitcom Get a Life."
You youngins may well have missed that one. Sadly, it only survived a couple of seasons, but a proper DVD release is in the works.

Track 2: Shael Riley and the Double Ice Backfire - "Hobby Model"
Shael has been known to write an occasional song about the ladies.

Track 3: Go Home Productions - "Models On Film"
Duran Duran vs. Kraftwerk -- what's not to love?

Track 4: Elvis Costello - "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea"
Blurring the lines between punk rock, new wave and birth control glasses.

Track 5: Xoc - "Beetlejuice: Model Town"
Xoc's Cinema 80s is still the shit.

Track 6: Rolling Stones vs. Pantera vs. Right Said Fred - "Too Sexy For My Pantera"
"I'm Too Sexy" is sort of the quintessential cheesy model song.

Track 7: Mr. B, The Gentleman Rhymer - "The Very Model"
He is both a gentleman and a rhymer.

Track 7: Superpowerless - "Positive Role Models"
I stumble across an older Superpowerless track from time to time. And for some reason I always just assume it's brand new shit until I check the ID3 date tag.

Z's 2nd interlude: "Weird personal challenge."
Which is now the working title of my autobiography.

Track 8: Mikey Mason - "She Don't Like Firefly"
I imagine this wholly fictitious young lady was the only person not excited by this week's news.

Track 9: Rappy McRapperson and MC Wreckshin - "Modeling and Dancing In Space"
Are there any Rappy songs where he doesn't mention Lake Hills?

Track 10: DJ Schmolli - "Dirty Model (Kraftwerk vs. Wynter Gordon)"
Yep; more Kraftwerk.

Track 11: Type - "Role Models"
Type's Amateur Hour and Bad Tattoos are both free over at Bandcamp. I suggest you cop 'em.

Z's final interlude: "And I reckon I did alright."
Yeah, I'm gonna call this experiment a success.

Track 12: Flight of the Conchords - "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)"
I just checked, and Flight of the Conchords is still $2.99. Buy that shit!

Okay, now that I've got that out of my system I promise to do a more traditional show next time. Maybe some, I dunno, Star Wars and video game shit. Some Ponies. You kids love the Ponies.

In the meantime, feel free to send me your song requests and show ideas. You know you want to.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 129: Straight Down the Middle

As I type this I am not playing Mass Effect 3. That likely goes without saying, but it's an important point. Because I want to be playing Mass Effect 3.

Instead I'm writing podcast notes for you, my friend. Much in the way that when I sat down to record and edit and mix the show itself I wasn't playing Mass Effect 3.

All I'm saying is that I care enough to compromise my gaming for your amusement. I don't need your pity or your gratitude or anything; I just figure it's never a bad idea to tell folks that they mean something to you.

Download Radio Free Hipster Ep. 129: Straight Down the Middle [hosting provided by Antisoc] Size: 58.9 MB Running Time: 44:51 Subscribe to RFH

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah - "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
My podcast theme song could beat up your podcast theme song.

Track 1: Klopfenpop - "Stillwield (Klopfenpop vs. Jonny Nero Action Hero)"
I really dig this track. It's got a different feel for Klopf—sort of a spoken-word kinda thing—and I love how it plays off Jonny's chiptune backing.

Z's 1st interlude: "Really happy that you are."
Thanks so much for listening! I feel like I don't say that enough.

Track 2: Adam WarRock - "Active Squad (feat. Beefy, Mikal kHill and Kabuto the Python)"
Mordin died in my game. I don't reckon that's spoilery, as your play-through might be completely different. But in mine he is dead. It was a noble sacrifice, and I miss him.

Track 3: Nosaj Thing - "Fog"
This one's for Larry. For some reason it reminds me of the Mass Effect 3 home screen, which I guess explains its placement.

Track 4: DJ Le Clown - "Do You Really Want to Tchiki Boom?"
I'm only just realizing that a significant portion of my listeners likely have no idea who the fuck Culture Club is. #old

Track 5: Service Lab - "BouncingHead Volleyball"
There's a strong electric groove in this one. I dig it.

Track 6: King Pheenix - "Bottle It (feat. Dale Chase)"
I'm kinda hoping Dale and KPX form some sort of hip-hop duo side project. I love how well they play off each other!

Z's 2nd interlude: "Hip-hop and electronic-music focused set."
I usually try to mix things up, stylistically-speaking, but this time around stuff seemed to gel into two distinct sets.

Track 7: Finntroll - "Trollhammaren"
Again, I blame this one on Steve. And also on the fact that I just found out I can watch Trollhunter for free via Amazon Prime.

Track 8: Alestorm - "Keelhauled"
Church turned me on to this one. He knows I dig metal and pirates.

Track 9: The Aeronauts - "My Marvelous Toys"
You might remember these guys from my recent "Steampunk Boba Fett" post.

Track 10: The Doubleclicks - "The Way I Glow"
This one is actually the counterpoint to the Molly Lewis track I played a couple shows back.

Track 11: The Boom Bang - "TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLEZ"
This is not my first atonal "Ninja Turtles" cover.

Z's final interlude: "Specialty metal."
That totally needs to be a thing.

Track 12: Shael Riley and The Double Ice Backfire - "Area Dolls Guy"
If you missed Songs from the Pit the first time around—which may be the case, as it was a cassette-only release in its original iteration—you need to snag this one. Hell, even if you do have the original, this one offers lots of expanded material.

I feel like I should be writing something thoughtful about how I usually piece together shows and how this one was a little different, but I reckon I've already elucidated enough on that. So instead I will simply bid you adieu.

Have a great St. Pat's! And if you're down for some multiplayer, holler at a scholar!

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 126: Pink on Both Sides

Spending the better part of two weeks at home with my wife and kids, all three of which are regular Top 40 radio listeners, influenced me (and this episode) in strange and wonderful ways. I didn't realize it at the time, of course, but those sugary radio hits were worming their way into my psyche. The whole damn time.

You'll certainly notice many musical allusions to current pop tracks in this show, but I also managed to work in some nods to classic material. Not to mention some pop-flavored originals.

I do hope you find it palatable.

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah - "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
If this song ain't a radio rager waiting to happen, I don't know what is!

Track 1: Eric "Erock" Calderone - "You Make My Dreams (Hall and Oates Meets Metal)"
I had originally planned to play Erock's Skyrim tribute, but this one sort of crept into the playlist.

Z's 1st interlude: "I've given you a taste of warped pop songwriting."
Which is a theme that continues throughout the episode.

Track 2: Kreayshawn - "Gucci Gucci (K.Flay Remix)"
Tell me she don't sound like mc chris!

Track 3: Regular Show dialog / mc chris - "hoodie ninja"
As heard in a recent episode of AFV. I shit you not.

Track 4: the modrats - "My Ninja"
Check out their newest release, Rocktarded. It is nerdy and punky and certainly satisfying.

Track 5: Supercommuter - "Natural Immunity (ft. Stumblebee)"
It was recently announced that Wheelie and Co. are headed to this side of the country for this year's PAX East.

Track 6: Mashup-Germany - "Top of the Pops 2011 (What the Fuck)"
I'm always impressed by the level of skill displayed in these end-of-the-year meta-mash-ups.

Track 7: Shael Riley and the Double Ice Backfire - "It's My Party"
Come Downstairs collects a lot of covers of traditionally feminine pop songs.

Track 8: Psycosis - "Pinkie Party Anthem"
Astute bronies will notice that the background music of this episode is also Pinkie Pie-related.

Z's 2nd interlude: "I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist."
I am, however, a theoretical conversationalist. Which is kinda the same thing. Right?

Track 9: Death*Star - "Fifty Dolla Word, Y'all"
I’m really digging A New Dope, Death*Star's sophomore release from last December.

Track 10: Donald Glover dialog / R_Garcia - "Seawater"
Resurgens runs the gamut from chippy IDM to this piece of poppy Coulton-esque perfection.

Track 11: Swagberg - "MMI Joint (feat. Navi)"
Of course I had to pick a Swagberg joint that also features my old pal Navi!

Track 12: Rappy McRapperson - "Pink and Purple"
"It's Carl Winslow / y'all brought the Urkel game."

Track 13: Pogo - "Jaaam"
I'm not sure what I enjoy more: Pogo's cut-up videos, or seeing how fast license holders try and get them yanked from YouTube. ;)

Z's final interlude: "The epic sports… ball… anthem… song?"
Just in time for the Super Bowl.

Track 14: Adam WarRock - "Waka Flocka Swanson"
There's really no valid reason that this is the only rap song about Ron Swanson.

We're getting awfully close to Valentine's Day, and that means the next episode will likely be one centered on love. Or lust. Or relationships.

You know: mushy stuff.

Some folks don't seem particularly keen on those types of shows, but I kinda dig 'em. And, unfortunately, I record the episodes alone so there's no one to talk me down off that ledge.

Still, if that shit ain't your scene, feel free to hit me up with ideas for the other February show. I just know you've got something you wanna hear.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 119: Vampire State of Mind

These Halloween Crap-tacular episodes will always hold a special place in my cold and lifeless heart.

This annual two-part celebration of musical monstrosities was among the first RFHs to feature a theme. Moreover, the inaugural episode marked the first time I ever incorporated background music into the show.

Now if only I hadn't given it such a cheesy goddamn name!

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
Unlike candy corn, you'll never get sick of my tasty theme song. Sadly, you can't wedge the track into your gums and pretend to be a vampire. Touché, candy corn!

Track 1: Sci-Fried - "Vampires Suck"
Another fine tune from Florida's premiere geek rockers. Not exactly their most original title, mind you, but still.

Z's 1st interlude: "A message from the great George Takei."
Sulu wants you to have a fun and safe Halloween.

Track 2: Community dialog / Kirby Krackle - "Bite of Another"
I love that a bunch of cats from Seattle can bust out the southern-style soul-rock.

Track 3: The Consortium of Genius - "Bite Me"
Wait; did he say "bite me on the butt?"

Track 4: ToToM - "Buffy the Toccata Slayer Freaks Out"
From this year's Texas Chainsaw Mashacre Halloween bastard pop compilation.

Track 5: Shael Riley and the Double Ice Backfire - "Juese Belmont"
That's me doing the intro. I'm famous now.

Track 6: Community dialog / Action Adventure World vs. The Plasmas - "Zombie Killing, Blood Spilling (Overworld #1)"
If you haven't already, cop their epic 2010 release Vol. 1 Ghosts n Goblins.

Track 7: Anthrax - "Fight'em 'Til You Can't"
Anthrax's Worship Music is, without a doubt, one of their greatest efforts to date. Having Joey Belladonna back makes all the difference.

Z's 2nd interlude: "With the stage set for a zombie apocalypse."
Because honestly, when isn't it?

Track 8: Community dialog / Death*Star - "The Quick and the Dead"
"Holy crap; Leonard's a zombie!"

Track 9: 8-Bit Weapon - "Die Die My Darling"
I have gotten far more miles out of that 8-bit Misfits tribute than even I would've thought possible.

Track 10: The Misfits - "Twilight of the Dead"
I'm still not quite sure what I think of the new (new-new?) Jerry Only-fronted Misfits, but this track fit so I went with it.

Track 11: Community dialog / Cheekyboy - "Living Dead Temper Baby"
Because nothing says Halloween like a Rob Zombie vs. Prodigy mash-up.

Track 12: Buck 65 - "Zombie Delight"
Likely the highlight of what is, at least in my opinion, a sweet-ass set. This one was suggested to me by my Canadian homey SelfHelp.

Z's final interlude: "We are the ultimate enemy."
Also, vampires and zombies are kinda cool. I think I left that out amid all my high-minded posturing.

Track 13: Illbotz - "Zombie Girl"
Yes, the Illbotz do doo-wop. It's one of the many services the group offers.

Let us now forget, boils and ghouls, that there's another Halloween-themed episode coming. A handful of artists have already told me to expect new seasonal singles by month's end, but I should still have plenty of room for requests.

Assuming, of course, that you've got 'em.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 116: Ugly Summer

Fun fact: I actually got the title of this episode from NPR. During a segment concerning the uprisings in Libya and Syria, the riots in London and the crush of recent natural disasters, the commentator referred to a bloody, ugly summer marked by violence and destruction. The phrase stuck in my mind.

Okay, admittedly that's not what you'd call a riveting tale; it's not exactly a keen look into my creative process, but it's something. And that's more than nothing.

Admittedly, this edition closes out the season on a bit of an odd note. But then again, I am nothing if not odd myself.

Download Radio Free Hipster Ep. 116: Ugly Summer [hosting provided by Antisoc] Size: 64.6 MB Running Time: 49:08

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
It's a warm-weather jam in itself.

Track 1: Backburner - "Heatwave"
The entire Heatwave album is now streaming free at Bandcamp. Check it out.

Z's 1st interlude: "One of my go-to seasonal themes."
Skip that; I am nothing if not consistent.

Track 2: Shael Riley and the Double Ice Backfire - "Here Comes the Hotstepper"
"MURDERAH!"

Track 3: Odyssey & The DNA Team - "My Little Pony Theme (Europener Mix)"
I really need to hold off on the MLP tracks, as I reckon Church is gonna have a grocery list of 'em ready for next month's drunkcast.

Track 4: Chaz Kangas - "Young, Gifted and Chaz"
Because rapping over the theme from The Critic is never a bad idea.

Track 5: Tribe One - "Different"
I gotta give it up to Tribe; this song is beautiful. Moreover, it was just the song I needed to hear.

Track 6: Go Home Productions - "Easy Divide"
Unfortunately I had a hard time following "Different" up, but I think this track did the trick.

Track 7: the modrats - "She's an Elf"
I totally didn't realize these guys were from SC until I was compiling my show notes!

Z's 2nd interlude: "The steam and the stink of a long, hot summer."
I honestly have no idea where I come up with this shit.

Track 8: The Deftones - "My Own Summer (Shinobi Ninja Rolling Stoned Remix feat. Skoob of Das EFX)"
You must own Hashy Larry. Make it yours.

Track 9: nYgel - "Rhyme Well [Interlude]"
This one is from nYgel's latest Antique Bird Collection, a mix that ain't even out yet!

Track 10: Maniac Robot - "You Said"
Something funky happened when I was recording/editing my narration that seemed to remove my reference to the proper name of this duo. That being said: Maniac Robot.

Track 11: Mega Ran - "Pump It Up! (feat. Adam WarRock)"
Gonna be nice to hear this joint performed live on the fall tour.

Track 12: K.Flay - "2 Weak"
There's just something sort of half-depressing and half-whimsical about this one. I kinda had to wrap up the set with it.

Z's final interlude: "The Sean Combs maneuver."
Y'all know what I'm talking about.

Track 13: Jackson 5 vs. Kid Rock - "I Want You Back All Summer Long (Calmucho Mashup)"
For the record, "All Summer Long" isn't Kid Rock's worst transgression. That would be that god-awful duet he did with Sheryl Crow. That is, quite possibly, the worst song ever.

Next month we once again pause to celebrate drunken podcasting. As is tradition.

Listen for the annual RFH drunkcast in late September, with a special episode in the earlier half of the month. But I've also got plans to guest on another podcast's inebriated festivities, because Drunken Podcasting Month is truly the season of sharing!

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 114: Fear and Loathing in Orlando

I have come to realize that the more nice shit you say, the less likely others are to actually believe it. Over-hyping something, even retroactively, is a cardinal sin. So I shall reign in my post-Nerdapalooza bliss.

I mean, I wouldn't go so far as to say Nerdapalooza 2011 was a religious experience, but it was extremely enjoyable and ultimately impressive. As a hardened critic, I was rather surprised when I sat down to collect my thoughts and everything that seemed to pour out was positive. But hey, I've already made that known.

This episode revisits the festival as an audio experience for all to (hopefully) enjoy. It boasts many of the acts from the event's expansive lineup, as well as my take on what each brought to the show.

It also features some live audio that I captured. It's far from perfect, but, given that I made zero effort to ensure audio fidelity, I think it came out surprisingly well.

Download Radio Free Hipster Ep. 114: Fear and Loathing in Orlando [hosting provided by Antisoc] Size: 63 MB Running Time: 48:44

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
The title of this episode is actually a reference to a running joke between my friends GeekDad Curtis and funky49.

Track 1: Shael Riley drop / The BossFights - "Conspiracy Theory"
If you listen closely, you'll hear my friend Josh say something about Coast to Coast AM at the end of Shael's drop, thus the decision to start things off with "Conspiracy Theory." Though the fact that I love Bishop's riff certainly didn't hurt.

Z's 1st interlude: "What I do remember recording was some bootleg audio."
I carried my H1 field recorder with me the entire weekend. Sadly, I only managed to turn it on a half-dozen or so times.

Track 2: Inverse Phase - "Song 6502"
I've seen very few live chiptune performances -- so it's not like I have a lot to compare it to -- but I have to say Inverse Phase killed with his set.

Track 3: Dual Core - "Invaders Must Die (feat. Remington Forbes) [Live at Nerdapalooza 2011]"
That fucker that keeps screaming "Reeeemmmaaaaayyy" and ruining the audio levels? Me.

Track 4: The OneUps - "Something about Koopa Beach"
My 6-year-old recently discovered Mario Kart (thanks to a DS Lite promo bundle from Nintendo), so we've been listening to a lot of cuts from this particular OneUps album.

Track 5: The Protomen - "The Fall"
Am I the only one who gets confused as to when to first pump and when to heartbeat clap at a Protomen show?

Track 6: Schaffer the Darklord - "Battlefont"
In case you missed the related Twitter conversation, I have asked STD and Nelson Lugo to host my wake. And they have agreed to do so. Best. Death. Ever.

Track 7: I Fight Dragons - "Money (feat. Klopfenpop) [Live at Nerdapaloza 2011]"
After all these years I finally got to meet Brian from IFD! Admittedly it was only for about a minute and a half, but it still totally counts.

Z's 2nd interlude: "I hung out with him and Stevo and Larry Oji."
Though it lacked the foam sword fighting and booth babes of some other installations, the OC ReMix table was easily the most entertaining at Nerdapalooza 2011. Simply by virtue of including these three amazing cats.

Track 8: Adam WarRock - "I Believe in Harvey Dent (feat. Tribe One) [Live at Nerdpalaooza 2011]"
Early on in the weekend Adam WarRock became my true-blue homeboy. He's relocating to my region later this year, so I imagine we'll start having sleepovers and painting each other's toenails. #pillowfight

Track 9: Illbotz - "Transform"
Let it be forever known that DJ Samson runs shit!

Track 10: The ThoughtCriminals - "Return of the Antagonist (featuring Illbotz) [Untested Methods Remix]"
kHill and Sulfur drove down from Charlotte on Saturday and, though they also had to cut out a bit early, they more than made their mark on Nerdapalooza 2011.

Track 11: Insane Ian - "Harry Potter"
When I think back on the FuMP sets from this year's festival the first words that my mind conjures are "impeccable comic timing." These are followed shortly by "multiple guest star."

Track 12: Shinobi Ninja - "This is How We Do It"
If you get a chance to catch Shinobi Ninja while they're on the road promoting Rock Hood, by all means take advantage of the opportunity. They blend metal and hip-hop and soul and reggae rock, but mostly they exude an infectious brand of stage energy.

Z's final interlude: "I just wanna say thank you to everyone who hung out with me at Nerdapalooza."
It was so amazing to meet all of you!

Track 13: Sci-Fried - "Fett's Vette [Live at Nerdapalooza 2011]"
I actually managed to record the entirety of the Sci-Fried set. I'm gonna clean it up and see what I can do with it.

Alright, I think I've said all I can and rightly should say about Nerdapalooza. I mean, except for revisiting that Adam WarRock interview I recorded. I should really do something with that.

But for the foreseeable future, at least, I'll shut the fuck up about it.

Because if you were there you already know what a magical weekend it was. And if you weren't then I kinda feel sorry for you.

Take the Wheel

If you missed the triumphant first episode of the new Beefy/Shael Riley project Captain Podcast – in which case shame the fuck all over you – then you likely missed the demo for a new Beefy joint featuring the great Adam WarRock entitled "Shots." It was produced by my brother Klopfenpop using a beat cribbed from Gnarls Barkley. Oh, and it is, perhaps unsurprisingly, about drinking. So, y'know, there's really a lot to love.

Earlier this week Beef posted a more polished iteration of the track up on the YouTubes. It's not a music video, per se, but it does boast an amazing illustration from Rusty Shackles so as to give your eyeballs something to do while your earholes are treated to the musical sweetness.

I have embedded it below so as to share its subtle glory with the rest of the nerd world. And also because if you're spending time on YouTube today it is likely just to rip chiptune plagiarist oncewewererobots a new one.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 107: Ballyhoo

It's funny the things you notice after a podcast has been completed. For example, the songs in this particular episode contain lots of derogatory terms. I mean lots.

I'm sort of famed – well, as famed as one can be with such a small but loyal listener base – for playing rather ribald content, but I actually considered scrapping this show when I realized how much potentially offensive language was used in the selected tracks. In the end, though, I realized both that most of these songs and artists aren't likely new to you and that you folks tend to have an incredibly thick skin when it comes to musical debauchery.

I mean, how many complaints did I get about mc chris's freaky Japanese maid fetish? Zero.

So I guess what I'm saying is enjoy this episode. In spite of yourself.

The RFH theme song is 100% free of ethnic slurs and hate speech. Just so you know.

Track 1: Shael Riley and the Double Ice Backfire – "Skyway"
I decided to start the show with Shael's tuneful take on the Apples in Stereo.

Z's 1st interlude: "Some of the featured tracks are really tight and, moreover, really mellow. While others harsh and loose."
As a result, this one won't likely be judged my best mix.

Track 2: Fishy – "Game On (~Opening~ Demo)"
I am currently playing Pokemon Black. Obviously, it doesn't fuck with the age old formula, but I gotta admit the first game of the 5th Pokemon generation has some nice new bells and whistles.

Track 3: Mashup-Germany – "Sexy Bitch in Memphis"
The lyrics to "Sexy Bitch" boast some of the most unintentionally hilarious phrases uttered by modern man.

Track 4: The Grammar Club – "No Homo"
There's something about the ham-fisted way in which Beefy's narrator tries to reconnect with his old friend that makes this song more than the simple joke track it could easily be interpreted to be.

Track 5: Untested Methods – "Just Dance"
Untested Methods actually gave you a present for his birthday.

Track 6: The ThoughtCriminals – "Liquid Happy"
Damn – I shoulda saved this one for Drunken Podcasting Month!

Track 7: Voltaire – "The USS Make Shit Up"
Church sent this one my way, and I simply had to share it.

Track 8: A-1 – "Doug (Funnie Bitch)"
Another fine selection from A-1's After School Special.

Z's 2nd interlude: "It's a chiptune interpretation of 'Blood of Cuchulainn.'"
I humbly suggest that you celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a little Shamroctoroc.

Track 9: MagiTek – "Dynamite Kid"
The new Magitek is a lot of fun, but this instrumental in particular hit me just the right way.

Track 10: mc chris – "IG-88 (killsaly remix)" / Star Wars dialog
killsaly recently followed up his Warrior Class mixtape with the cleverly titled Class Warrior.

Track 11: John Anealio – "Mr. Roboto"
Check out John's new freebie The Robot EP.

Track 12: Benjamin Bear – "Bloodclot"
I know by this time everyone else has already moved onto Ben's new album Tuesday, but there's something to be said for the rough and imprecise nature of Everything Left.

Track 13: Adam WarRock – "Hopeless Savages"
I am also still loving WarRocks' Oni Press Mixtape. My only complaint – needs more Blue Monday and Barry Ween!

Z's final interlude: "I think genres are, as a rule, often more for fans and the media than for the artists themselves."
I have been making a concerted effort not to sermonize of late, but little rants like this sometimes creep out before I can beat them back into submission.

Track 14: Childish Gambino – "New Prince (Crown on the Ground)"
"Yeah, I stay fly like a pelican / Get new kicks everyday like an ottoman."

I also notice that this episode has some weird audio artifacts – some popping and crackling that I somehow missed in post-production. My voice sounds a tad rough too, although whether that's a legitimate sound issue or the lingering effects of flu is anyone's guess.

Still, if anybody wants to donate to the buy-me-a-new-computer-before-this-one's-totally-fucked fund, feel free.

The late March edition of Radio Free Hipster will likely not come until... well, April. Moreover, it will (hopefully) be my annual Podswap episode. I'm currently trying to convince one of my many talented podcasting peers to helm the show on April 1st, as is tradition.

I have no doubt that you'll be pleased with the outcome, whatever it is.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 102: Double Stuf

If you find this particular episode to be too lengthy, I suggest you take it up with Snipe, Data, Scott, Kyle and Vincent. They said it was okay to extend this show out a bit, it being my last one of the year. So, y'know, totally their fault. ;)

That being said, this edition is positively loaded with studious hip-hop, quirky covers and bitpop galore, so I can't imagine you'll mind.

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
Spellah and Beefy, or as I like to call them Father Time and Baby New Year.

Track 1: Illbotz – "At the Trap" / "Gyeah!"
I can't help but admire Stevie D's near preternatural whiteness!

Z's 1st interlude: "That's exactly what I'm gonna do today."
Yep, my usual year-end show. Don't even act surprised.

Track 2: Wordburglar – "Walking Dope"
New hotness from Burg!

Track 3: Glee dialog / Harry and the Potters & Erwin Beekveld – "Felix Felicis [Eighth Clockwise Stir Mix]"
Because a reggae-dub Wizard Rock remix is exactly the kind of thing every New Year's Eve party needs.

Track 4: Hidden Fortress – "Apotheosis (feat. Modulok)"
I'll be reviewing Hidden Fortress's All That Is next month.

Track 5: The Office dialog / Doctor Popular – "Möbius Strip Tease"
In case you missed it, Doc's Beeps and Smudges is truly his best release yet.

Track 6: The Vitrolum Republic – "Make Believe Girlfriend"
Featuring the talents of fellow GeekDad Chuck Lawton.

Track 7: Never Yet Contested – "Get it Down"
Speaking of, I spotlighted NYC's "Retro" single on GeekDad back in November. Since that time the EP has been released in earnest, and I highly suggest you give it a listen.

Track 8: Tetrastar – "Crank That"
Superpowerless also covered this track with his previous project Scared of Dinosaurs.

Track 9: The Grammar Club – "Super Girls and Ghosts"
On Christmas Day the Club dropped their long awaited follow-up release MC Horse Rides Again.

Track 10: Say Anything dialog / Stenobot – "Butterfly Wings (feat. Jen Wood)"
It occurred to me that, though I've talked a lot about his latest album, I haven't actually played anything from Sink or Swim We'll Go Together. This situation has now been remedied.

Z's 2nd interlude: "This marathon exposition."
The good news is that this episode features a larger-than-usual collection of songs. The bad is that it also features more of me talking.

Track 11: A Little Dead Podcast bumper / YTCracker – "Take a Knee"
Because "Quarterback Kneel" doesn't have as nice a ring to it.

Track 12: sadnes – "Bittersweet Symphony"
Yet another amazing cover from sadnes.

Track 13: Selfhelp – "The Rent is Too Damn High (feat. Ill Seer, prod. by Hoodee)"
The wise words of Jimmy McMillan's core platform celebrated in song. Next up, a track about marrying a shoe. Please?

Track 14: I Fight Dragons – "The Power of Love"
I love the original, and this chip-rock take is equally enamoring.

Track 15: Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers dialog / A-1 – "Black Ranger"
A-1's After School Special mixtape is a thing of beauty, and the perfect companion piece to Doctor Octoroc's After These Messages.

Track 16: Benjamin Bear – "Burning Away (feat. Jaylyn Hindle)"
Your second dose of Jaylyn.

Z's final interlude: "Another year of my own exploration into nerd-friendly music."
For the record, next year marks my 5th!

Track 17: Girl Talk – "That's Right"
Likely the best moment of Girl Talk superlative All Day mix.

Thanks to all the listeners new and old that came along with me throughout 2010. It was a great year for the podcast. I mean shit, I won an award! What more can a fellow ask?

Looking forward to 2011, inspired by a particularly interesting listener voicemail I think I'll kick off the year with an upbeat mixtape-style show. From there the sky's the limit, so feel free to hit me up with your own requests or show ideas.

And until then, Happy New Year to all!

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 100: Centennial Man

I compare producing the 100th episode of a podcast to losing your virginity – you're really anxious and excited about it, but once it's over you're pretty sure you did it all wrong.

That being said, here's Radio Free Hipster episode number 100. I couldn't have done it without you, and I mean that in more ways than one. So kick back and enjoy.

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
Fun fact – Spellah's RFH theme song premiered in episode #15. Does that necessitate its own anniversary show?

Track 1: Baddd Spellah – "99 Balloon Flights"
Starting off the show is a cut for GeekOnABlog.

Z's 1st interlude: "And pretty much did my job for me."
For serious.You did.

Track 2: Parry Gripp – "Yub-Nub"
My brother Dave the Knave picked this one. A fine addition!

Track 3: Dual Core – "Fantastic Four (feat. Beefy, YTCracker & Wheelie Cyberman)"
This one was sort of a catch-all. A lot of y'all wanted to hear it. And so did I.

Track 4: Dave Ross voicemail / Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew – "Shore Leave"
Thanks so much for the nice voicemail, Dave!

Track 5: 10000 Spoons – "Astley Gone To Heaven"
This one is for Antisoc, without whom this podcast would be bereft of the bandwidth it needs to succeed.

Track 6: POWERLIFTER – "Mr. Brightside (feat. Jeremy Spring)"
Oberon the Fool asked for some Scrub Club, so I delivered the new hotness.

Track 7: Wordburglar – "Hermaphromic"
This podcast has only one rule – if Snipeyhead makes a request, I damn sure better play it.

Track 8: The Mudbloods – "I Wish You'd Be My Witch"
My buddy Matt, who actually really got me into the Mudbloods, asked for this little jewel.

Z's 2nd interlude: "You knew I'd play them anyway."
You guys know me so well!

Track 9: Optimus Rhyme – "Click-Click"
Is it wrong to play my own request? Probably.

Track 10: Schaffer the Darklord – "Club Destroyer (feat. Removal)"
For Tom B. I chose this amazingly rocked up joint from Manslaughterer.

Track 11: Metroid Metal – "Prime Theme (MP)" / Bonehand voicemail
Steve was not only nice enough to have me on his own show to promote RFH 100, he even went so far as to leave me a congratulatory message. What a guy!

Track 12: Random & K-Murdock – "Dream Master" / Seattle Geekly voicemail
Thanks to my homey funky49 for the request, and much love to my comrade-in-arms Matt (of Seattle Geekly) for the voicemail. Truth be told, the kind words of my fellow podcasters were the true highlight of this show for me.

Track 13: Rivercrest Yacht Club – "Robot Jox"
Alex wanted to hear some Rivercrest Yacht Club. I chose this one because I love the trippy, Star Trek-style intro.

Track 14: I Fight Dragons – "With You"
This one's for datavortex who wanted to hear an IFD song featuring the dulcet tones of former member Laura Trainor.

Z's final interlude: "Turning you on to even more great shit."
Speaking of, big ups to my longtime friend Brux for the tailor-made background music.

Track 15: Southside – "1010011"
Southside, just like Schaffer the Darklord before them, are the recipients of the coveted "See, I Told You They Was Dope" Award.

Guys, I've said it before and I'll say it again – this show wouldn't exist without you. For those of you who've been down with Radio Free Hipster from the beginning, thanks for your continued support. For those that are new to the show, thanks for giving it a chance. To my fellow podcasters, thanks for your kind words and for providing me with constant inspiration from your own unique undertakings. And to my crew – Church, Matt, Soc, Dave, Jason, et al – you guys are the oil, gears and animalistic grunts that keep this machine moving ever forward.

By this point y'all know the drill. December will see my annual holiday episode and a last musical gasp before year's end. If there's anything you'd like me to cover in either, don't hesitate to give me a holler.

Radio Free Hipster Ep. 97: Famous Monsters

Oh, Halloween Crap-tacular – how I adore you!

These horror-themed episodes were my very first regular podcast feature, and much of what Radio Free Hipster is today was shaped by this diversion into the macabre. It led to both my regular use of background music and to my heavy reliance on film and television samples.

It's one of the reasons I so love my two-part October special edition. Well, that and the fact that Halloween is the geekiest of holidays!

Download Radio Free Hipster Ep. 97: Famous Monsters [hosting provided by Antisoc] Size: 42.6 MB Running Time: 46:28 Subscribe to RFH

Show Notes:

Intro: Baddd Spellah – "Radio Free Hipster Theme (feat. Beefy)"
Not a lot of people know this, but Baddd Spellah is totally a werewolf. It's a common affliction in Canada.

Track 1: John Anealio – "Lonesome October Night"
I misspoke. The Roger Zelazny novel is actually entitled A Night in the Lonesome October.

Z's 1st interlude: "Or not."
I try my best not to use time-sensitive greetings while recording the podcast. Shit, I have no idea when you're gonna be hearing this thing!

Track 2: Ghetto Lee Lewis – "Panic at Camp Crystal"
To my knowledge, this is the only OverClocked ReMix of a track from the Friday the 13th video game soundtrack.

Track 3: Kabuto The Python and Dr. Awkward – "Thinkin' Lincoln"
This episode features two appearances by Dr. Awkward. This is the first.

Track 4: Uncle Monsterface – "[feed mysterious creature]"
"You've been eaten by a chinchilla."

Track 5: Cheekyboy – "Busta Ghosts"
From this year's Monster Mash-Up double album!

Track 6: Darkest of the Hillside Thickets – "Space Ghosts"
How did I not toss a SGC2C sample into this?

Track 7: Grover – "Smell Like a Monster" / Vernian Process – "Monster Dance"
Best Old Spice parody ever!

Track 8: The Aquabats – "The Thing on the Bass Amp"
This one's a special request from my friend Dave the Knave.

Z's 2nd interlude: "Let me pause for a moment here to big up the creator of the background music."
virt is the shit.

Track 9: Schaffer the Darklord – "The Invisible Man (feat. Shael Riley)"
The narrative in this song has the sort of twist ending that could only come from the mind of STD.

Track 10: Tetrastar – "Skullcrusher Mountain"
I think Jaylyn really sells the role of mad scientist storyteller. Better, even, than JoCo.

Track 11: Mikal kHill – "The Walking Dead"
I dig that Mikal's zombie tale ends with the narrator giving up. It's an interesting take on the undead apocalypse.

Track 12: The Bossfights – "Left4Dead"
And this is Doc Awk's second appearance.

Track 13: DJ TOPCAT – "Grave Puppets"
I've never been a big follower of horrorcore, but there was always something really enjoyable about hip-hop supergroup Gravediggaz.

Z's final interlude: "A track both near and dear to my heart."
There are few things more beautiful and precious in this life than a Replacements parody.

Track 14: Illbotz – "Here Comes the Predator"
It saddens me to think that Illbotz are just far enough away to prevent me from actually seeing them live. :(

Obviously, episode 98 will also be Halloween-themed, so feel free to hit me up with your ghoulish requests.

After that we head straight-on into November with an un-themed episode (#99) and my all-important 100th show! I'm still taking song requests and begging soliciting for listener voicemails to play in-ep. Please do your part to remind me that I'm not just talking to myself in this podcast.

Seriously.

I'll be your best friend.

20-Sided Rhymes

Dave the Knave is a genius!
If I had any credibility at all, the 20-Sided Rhymes project would've blown it to hell. You see, this compilation hasn't been in the works for weeks or months, but for years – two of them, in fact. And like most things, what it ultimately became was not what I had initially intended.

The original idea that I pitched to a close circle of friends shortly before Nerdapalooza 2008 involved little more than a tribute album to the classic role-playing game (a la Dungeons & Dragons). But as tabletop gaming proved a bit of a limiting concept for our friends in the video game music scene I soon expanded the scope to include the electronic games that were the direct successors of pen-and-paper RPGs.

Since I was projecting forward it only made sense to also look back, and so the piece was altered again to encompass not only the more modern and technological flavors of role-playing but also the literary roots that inspired this entire movement in interactive entertainment.

But somehow that still wasn't enough. So in the end, 20-Sided Rhymes, this clean and simple concept that I thought I had totally hashed out years ago, somehow became something bigger. Because at some point I realized that the iconic die role and the eternal plight of Hyrule's green-clad hero and even the simple nerdy pleasures of seeing The Lord of the Rings series competently brought to life on a big screen weren't in and of themselves what I was looking to capture.

These were, if you'll allow me the luxury of hyperbole, merely manifestations of the true spirit of nerdom.
The thing that excited me about this project was the same thing that excited me about D&D and comics and sci-fi/fantasy and all the other trappings of my geeky adolescence – it all hinged on the ever-so appealing concept of losing yourself in a character.

Call me crazy, but I believe that we as nerds game and read and write and create more or less for the same reason. These activities are all about stepping outside ourselves, they are about exploring other lives and worlds and personalities. Some would likely attribute this to a sense of innate self-loathing, to the worst kind of escapism, but I have learned that playing another part or latching on to the experiences of a fully rendered external character actually serves to help me gain a firmer grasp on what it really means to be me. It allows me to further quantify my own motivations and reexamine my ideas and my attitudes.

From Nate's lament of his healer's lack of physical prowess to ZeaLouS1's gangstalicious take on CCGs, and even to Marc's rejection of the D20 in favor of a little transgender theatrical cosplay, 20-Sided Rhymes represents the musical equivalent of the fantastical character-driven narrative. Some of said characters may not belong to these performers outright, but the stories are all theirs. And that's the important part.

So please enjoy this fine selection of rarities, remixes, re-releases and more than a couple of tasty originals with my compliments. If you enjoy this project, please spread the word and support the artists represented.
As usual, I offer this compilation to you free of charge, although this time around I do ask that you consider doing one of the following:

Should any or all of the songs presented herein remind you of that magical journey you once took in the purely metaphorical shoes of another character, consider treating yourself to a new game or film or novel. And feel free to lose yourself within the power of an enchanting narrative. It's healthy.

More to the point, you could also donate a couple of dollars to the Child's Play charity to afford a sick kid that same opportunity to escape the drudgery of real life for a few scant moments. It's what a Lawful Good character would do!
And now that I've said my piece, on with the show.
